How To Keep Your Cat Cool In Warm Weather

Blog

When you live in a warm climate, you need to make sure that you keep your cat safe. Heat can have a negative impact on your cat, and this can cause them to become dehydrated and get heatstroke. If your cat becomes dehydrated or too warm, it can cause heatstroke. This will require that you take them to the vet. Here's what you need to know to keep your cat safe in the heat.

Check Your Cat's Water Bowl

To prevent dehydration, you need to make sure that you keep your cat's water bowl replenished with water. Ensure that you have multiple water bowls available in areas that your cat likes to frequent.

Many cats will nap more often when the weather is warm. Of course, this may mean you need to be observant.  Watch your cat closely for a day and you will find out where to put the water bowls. Put the bowl of water in a shaded area near where your cat likes to nap so that they will be more inclined to drink water.

Keep the Place Cool

If your cat likes to stay inside, keep indoors as cool as possible. You can open windows to let in fresh air when there is enough breeze outside. If the weather is hot and there is hardly any breeze, you may want to turn on your fans inside or your air conditioning unit.

Place your cat's bed near a fan if possible. If you elevate your cat's bed off the floor, air will be able to pass under your cat's bed and this will keep them cooler.

Give Your Cat the Right Look

One of the things that pet owners often overlook when they are thinking about keeping their cat cool during the warm summer months is the grooming of the cat. Remember that cats have fur and this can make them get very warm during the summer.

If your cat's fur is getting very long, you might want to try getting them a trim during the summer months. If you live in a consistently warm climate, your cat should be getting fur trims all the time. This will help to keep your cats cool so that they do not become dehydrated.

Keeping your cat cool and hydrated when it is hot is extremely important. Keeping them cool will ensure that you do not have to make an emergency trip to the vet for dehydration and heat stroke issues.
